Six hook shapes.
Not forty-seven.

Every "viral hook formula" list you have seen was written by a model that was asked to sound confident. This one is the actual matrix a working tool validates against. A closed list of six, because a label the software cannot check is a label nobody should trust.

Every example below is a real line Hookzo wrote, kept only if its number audit came back clean.

01 · start hereThe words that give you away

Most hook guides hand you "power words". This is the opposite list, and it is the more useful one: these are the phrases a tool built for creators refuses to write, because in 2026 they read as machine-made on sight.

Never open with any of these

  • You won't believe
  • This changed my life
  • Here's what nobody tells you
  • Here's what's actually happening
  • The real reason is
  • The truth about
  • Let's dive in
  • Buckle up
  • Game-changer
  • In today’s video
  • Stop scrolling
  • Little did I know

And the one almost nobody polices: the em dash. It is the single most recognizable fingerprint of machine writing right now, and creators get mocked for it in their own comments. Use a comma, a period, or parentheses. Two short sentences beat one dash-spliced sentence, and they read better out loud anyway.

02 · the matrixThe six, with real lines

Each shape gets a template you can fill, then two hooks that were actually generated, each with its B variant. Read the pairs closely: the B is never a reword.

Curiosity gap

Tease the payoff without giving the answer. The most reached-for shape, and the easiest to ruin by answering yourself in line two.

What happens in the [stretch nobody documents]?

What happens in the years nobody sees?

The breakthrough you're waiting for is on the other side of boring consistency.

People are making serious money without selling anything.

The tool is free. The code is free. The income is not.

Pattern interrupt

A sharp, strange or unexpected opener. Works because it does not look like the forty videos before it.

Watch [oddly specific thing] when [ordinary moment].

Watch where your dog goes when they're scared.

The room your dog follows you into tells you everything about how much they trust you.

ChatGPT is hiding output modes behind one-word commands.

Ten codes exist inside ChatGPT. Most users never find them.

Stat shock

Lead with a concrete, surprising number. One rule above all: the number has to be real. A hook built on an invented figure is the fastest way to lose an audience that checks.

[number] in, [number] still remain.

212 days in, 153 still remain.

More than five months left to start something you've been putting off since January.

IShowSpeed hit 60 million subscribers in 5 years.

What started as chaotic bedroom live streams became a global entertainment phenomenon.

Before / after

Contrast a transformation in one line. The trap is spending the whole hook on the "before". The turn has to land inside the first sentence.

[time] of [bad result]. One [change] fixed it.

Six months of zero dollars. One hook change fixed it.

I made nothing for half a year. The fix was not the content, it was how I started it.

Nobody wanted this garage until I showed what it could be.

A garage nobody bid on became a transformation that won us the contract.

Identity callout

Speak directly to exactly who the viewer is. Precision beats reach: "if you are building a business" outperforms "if you want success".

You [did the right thing]. Then you [lost them] in the [moment].

You opened strong. Then you lost them in the second half.

The hook brings them in. The first ten seconds keeps them.

If you're building a business, AI-proof industries exist.

AI is crushing entire sectors right now. These twelve are untouchable.

Contrarian

The opposite of a common belief in your niche, and the one shape with a hard condition: you need evidence you can point at. A contrarian take with nothing behind it is just a claim, and the comments will say so.

Stop [common practice] and your [metric] actually [improves].

Stop chasing trends and your views actually go up.

Trends are where most creators waste their energy.

GitHub is not just for developers copying code.

Open-source tools on GitHub can become six-figure businesses.

03 · the A/B ruleA variant is not a reword

This is where most hook testing quietly fails. If both versions open on the same number or the same comparison, you have not written a variant. You changed the vocabulary and learned nothing from the test.

The rule: change the shape, not the words. If A is a Stat shock, B should be a Curiosity gap or a Before / after. You are testing which angle of attack your audience responds to, and that answer is worth knowing. Which synonym you used is not.

Look back at the pairs above. Every A is one shape and every B is a different one. That is the whole discipline.

What this file does not claim. Nobody measured how these specific lines performed after publishing, so you will not find a "3.4x" next to any of them, and you should be suspicious of any hook list that does. What is true: these are real generated lines, each one kept only because an automated check found no figure it could not trace back to a source.

05 · what comes nextNew hooks, when there are new hooks

The corpus grows every time a creator captures a board. When enough new shapes clear the floor, I write them up the same way and send them out. No schedule, because a newsletter with a schedule starts padding.

One address, unsubscribed in one click. Nothing else is sent.

Corpus figures measured 2026-08-21: 1,616 posts from 143 creators across 37 niches. Example hooks are real generated output, filtered to those whose number audit returned clean.
